Allen Park Chamber of Commerce

Allen Park, Michigan is conveniently located approximately 15 miles southwest of Downtown Detroit and approximately 7 miles east of Detroit Metropolitan Airport. There are two major interstates surrounding the city: I-75 to the south and I-94 to the north. This makes Allen Park easily accessible to anywhere you may want to travel. It is also divided by one of the area’s most traveled freeways, Southfield Freeway, which connects some of Metro Detroit’s most popular suburbs.

The Allen Park Department of Parks and Recreation offers a wide variety of programs, activities, and facilities for Allen Park residents of all ages.

The new Community Center has a full-size gymnasium, upstairs walking track and fitness area along with multi-purpose rooms to be used for a wide variety of activities. A new kitchen facility along with a new concession stand will provide food and beverages for all activities. The ice arena renovation includes all new ice making equipment, new boards and glass, along with renovated locker rooms.

The Frank J. Lada Arena is available for open public skating and the ice is available for rental for hockey teams and ice-skating lessons. The newly constructed Community Center also will have multi-purpose rooms and a full size gym available for rent.

Athletic and competitive activities for adults and children include baseball, basketball, in-line hockey, ice hockey, soccer, tennis, swimming and men’s and women’s softball.

The department offers a wide variety of programs with instruction given in aerobic exercise, jazzercise, youth dance, ballroom dance, tennis, golf and kickboxing. Also available are instruction classes needed to obtain certification in safe boating and snowmobiles.

For senior citizens, the department has developed activity and service programs. The seniors meet five days a week to participate in a number of activities. This site serves hot lunches including meals-on-wheels for homebound residents.

Offered to seniors are bingo, cards, instructional classes, mini-trips, exercise, quilting, travel club tele-care, movies, senior swim, and a friendly place to meet. There is blood pressure testing, health screening and flu shots offered through our local hospitals several times a year. The department offers transportation service for a nominal fee.

The Allen Park Downtown Development Authority (DDA) was formed by resolution of the Mayor and Council of the City of Allen Park in 1991. The Authority was created to halt property value deterioration within its district, to eliminate causes of that deterioration, to increase property valuation where possible, and to promote economic growth.

The DDA district is comprised of the following areas: Southfield Road; Allen Road, from the northern city limit to Englewood; Ecorse Road; Park Avenue, from Allen Road to Regina; Roosevelt Road; and Enterprise Drive, from Southfield to Outer Drive.

Since its inception, the DDA has completed many projects, including several consolidated parking lots and a major streetscape on Park Avenue.

Programs available to assist business owners include a Facade Improvement Program and Site Improvement Program. Additionally, the DDA is the proud sponsor of a Classic Car Show in June and a Fall Festival in September of each year.

The Allen Park Downtown Development Authority exists to improve the financial and physical integrity of the City’s business district. For more information, please contact the Executive Director at (313) 928-0940(313) 928-0940. The DDA is working to make Allen Park a place where you want to do business.
